City Focus: Kunming

For this week's City Focus, we lend our gaze to "The City of Eternal Spring", Kunming, located in the Yunnan Province in southwest China. Home to over 6.5 million people and a melting pot of 26 indigenous nationalities, the city has established itself as the largest in the province and has flourished as the political, economic and cultural hub of the area. The nickname of the city comes from the year-round moderate climate that stays roughly between 8.9-20.3 degrees Celcius. However, the weather is far from the only thing that makes Kunming such an attractive destination. Spectacles such as the Stone Forrest, Dianchi Lake, Jiuxiang Scenic Area, and Western Hill can all be found within the folds of the city, and provide beautiful sights to anyone experiencing them. Beyond the sites, the intermingling but unchanging cultures of the different nationalities bring to fruition very unique customs and fun traditions like the Torch Festival or the Huashan Festival, where these groups can showcase their contrasting but similar styles.

Adding to those opportunities, the city is hosting their Vol. 1 event on the 26th of July, it is surely not something anyone should want to miss! Best of luck to all of our friends in Kunming!

If you are one of those people, make sure to stay tuned for updates from Ana Pinto de Silva, the city organizer for events coming down the pipeline!

Seeing the World in LEGO: Mixing Creativity, Art and STEM

BY LUKE LYONS
@ VOL 19 ON JUN 04, 2019

What if the world was made of LEGO? In this talk, Luke Lyons shares how he sees the world as tiny plastic interlocking bricks.  Lyons, like many children, grew up playing with LEGO, but today he uses LEGO as an outlet for his creativity and artistic side.  He has created LEGO scale buildings of old high schools, university buildings, train stations and designed his own museum specifically for the purpose of displaying a LEGO Tyrannosaurus rex. He discusses how LEGO promotes creativity in STEM education, while still accessing the arts.
